Why Do Women with Younger Husbands Die Younger?

Women hoping for a long life would be wise to marry a man of a similar age, according to a recent study. It doesn't matter whether a woman marries a younger or an older man -- if the age gap is significant, she is likely to die younger than women who marry men of a similar age.

The study was done by Sven Drefahl of Germany's Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research on the marriage and death records of two million Danish couples, Britain's Daily Mail reported on Friday. According to Drefahl, a woman whose husband is seven years younger is 20 percent more likely to die earlier than a woman whose husband is of a similar age. It is likewise for a woman whose husband is older by a large gap.

What’s the explanation? Drefahl said women with older or younger husbands must deal with social pressures caused by the atypical relationship, and the stress generated from such pressure may have detrimental effects on their health.

Ironically, the study suggests that it benefits men to marry younger women. Men who marry women seven years their junior are 11 percent less likely to die before their time than men whose wives are the same age.
